The timing really couldn't have been more perfect for me. Having recently lost 95%+ of my hobby stuff, including all of the rules and most of the models, this is a perfect jumping back in point.<div><br /></div><div>Given that I don't currently have much in the way of a coherent army, I'll be starting with 500pts of Raven Guard Successors. I'll most likely be using the upcoming Crusade rules to give my dudes a bit of lore as I build up the army.</div><div><br /></div><div>To start with, I'll be using a Vanguard Marines Patrol Detachment...</div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Captain in Phobos Armour (Warlord)</li><li>Lieutenant in Phobos Armour</li><li>10x Infiltrators</li><li>3x Suppressors</li></ul><div>I was able to salvage these models, but the painting I'd done was ruined and so were the bases. I'm going to start by rebasing and priming. The glue for the sand is currently drying. It's a nice day, so I'm hoping to prime them so I can start painting tomorrow (or maybe tonight).</div></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipFW-iEbyI5c1DOGxdQZnkeWEK78T0U0bGfHuV0HP7gGiX7vh11fDICgN_ldqoMHGrBQpnKocL_yu3qUpEYU0lEUayqcfih2-ZXrr3UBw-DMD1dFYH20-XtmYdofiHWRW8NEFQk50kIv8/s4096/IMG_20200608_104145830.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3072" data-original-width="4096" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipFW-iEbyI5c1DOGxdQZnkeWEK78T0U0bGfHuV0HP7gGiX7vh11fDICgN_ldqoMHGrBQpnKocL_yu3qUpEYU0lEUayqcfih2-ZXrr3UBw-DMD1dFYH20-XtmYdofiHWRW8NEFQk50kIv8/w400-h300/IMG_20200608_104145830.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>I have a game scheduled for Friday night with a friend. I'm hoping to be able to get some paint on at least a few of these guys before them. I was originally going to go for a halved paint scheme, but I'm changing my mind on that. Now, I think I'm going to go for more of a dark teal color, with grey cloaks. I think that'll look nice.</div>Kris Wallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03377993642155815622noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4778348387555569382.post-68635457442714477102020-06-05T01:00:00.001-04:002020-06-05T01:00:02.301-04:00Project Khorne Dogs - Karanak Pt2Time to get painting!<div><br /></div><div>First off, this is what I'm working with. My buddy Jon sent this to me so that I could get restarted.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu75zQgNJML4lOupbX3jhhDN0CUK1ovWBUBqOB7wA4DuD8GbenOhTx4vkih3bmq7orxKCkeYUT9DbVtwgKRciFS2iMkAMiTHiaaykL2IJs0hiobXF00uz4vSx5Y8wTfeY_hZoLNOII1-c/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="726" data-original-width="877" height="331" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu75zQgNJML4lOupbX3jhhDN0CUK1ovWBUBqOB7wA4DuD8GbenOhTx4vkih3bmq7orxKCkeYUT9DbVtwgKRciFS2iMkAMiTHiaaykL2IJs0hiobXF00uz4vSx5Y8wTfeY_hZoLNOII1-c/w400-h331/71gW%252BOREtXL._AC_SL1200_.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>I spent probably an hour and a half popping open all the bottles and dropping in a ball bearing. This is supposed to really help with mixing up the paints... and the set came with 100 ball bearings, so it seemed like a no brainer.</div><div><br /></div><div>I also picked up a couple of Games Workshop contrast paints because I've been wanting to see how they work and this seems like the perfect opportunity. I picked up Blood Angels Red and Shyish Purple.</div><div><br /></div><div>Before I get started with the pictures, AP means Army Painter and GW means Games Workshop.</div><div><br /></div><div>I started out doing a heavy drybrush of AP Dark Stone followed by AP Ash Grey and AP Matt White. The goal was to give the contrast paint a nice underlying shading. It felt almost like painting the model in black and white, but very rough.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaM_8Mv-3qnQwZtu5JCgphF8ysisQpS4aW8vY8XwMr43z0ZG7W-ZUkw7xAkHNGKMPEaFh_nEkJsjE4Ug5l8HZoNSAQh167uLNGO1GDHZCsB5r_dP5kzu6IGf_CSUU6gODBG3nR8M7ZonY/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3072" data-original-width="4096" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaM_8Mv-3qnQwZtu5JCgphF8ysisQpS4aW8vY8XwMr43z0ZG7W-ZUkw7xAkHNGKMPEaFh_nEkJsjE4Ug5l8HZoNSAQh167uLNGO1GDHZCsB5r_dP5kzu6IGf_CSUU6gODBG3nR8M7ZonY/w200-h150/IMG_20200602_201211036.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfy0bNJbl-z6uCs1Iz4RSezT4dqN19a4MIVzXGznpf7WGfpxodtnVAUsDtKxiUFAOP64ow1JN5gdGhpdMJrILN8i9feeeOfa6FuZ3HXrxiCrfDtR82p0v-PeNeWFOaAbjpZeRbEqkRKxc/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3072" data-original-width="4096" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfy0bNJbl-z6uCs1Iz4RSezT4dqN19a4MIVzXGznpf7WGfpxodtnVAUsDtKxiUFAOP64ow1JN5gdGhpdMJrILN8i9feeeOfa6FuZ3HXrxiCrfDtR82p0v-PeNeWFOaAbjpZeRbEqkRKxc/w200-h150/IMG_20200602_201725088.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOedrplRTTblAOQrllmh6V3ZstZGoJjWxb889x7IJnXMY25s0ZvioQ58nRxnu3TsVWF5rirOlZmRBvXzFN2DN5pjsk2QbCVryknLBpy58ksTDvtdS-IEZ2nd05tyv6cz3g_WePosUTeWY/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3072" data-original-width="4096" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOedrplRTTblAOQrllmh6V3ZstZGoJjWxb889x7IJnXMY25s0ZvioQ58nRxnu3TsVWF5rirOlZmRBvXzFN2DN5pjsk2QbCVryknLBpy58ksTDvtdS-IEZ2nd05tyv6cz3g_WePosUTeWY/w400-h300/IMG_20200602_202131246.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>For the next bit, I wish I had taken more photos of the intermediate steps. This is the still wet photo...</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkkLezPNkmd1-KbD2bcT4zPCw32x8O4ylmj5rdjxCHuN7dzd6CD_05uZqDRCLNoroJxIAPi_-p5vWxcKqEtMKJT11gJHWZo_p-OdtHOK0VMsO7ZW-NFgIRnNZUYKz5bTdE7qpGJrZpoPg/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3072" data-original-width="4096" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkkLezPNkmd1-KbD2bcT4zPCw32x8O4ylmj5rdjxCHuN7dzd6CD_05uZqDRCLNoroJxIAPi_-p5vWxcKqEtMKJT11gJHWZo_p-OdtHOK0VMsO7ZW-NFgIRnNZUYKz5bTdE7qpGJrZpoPg/w400-h300/IMG_20200602_203428102.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Once that was dry, I added some GW Shyish Purple contrast paint to what I considered to be the darker areas... the bits of hair, the tail and the frills. Once the purple was dry, I drybrushed the hair and frills with AP Dragon Red and the AP Pure Red. This was done to try to blend the purple and red together.</div><div><br /></div><div>For the mouth, I based the tongue in a 50/50 AP Pixie Pink/AP Pure Red mix and then highlighted the end with AP Pixie Pink. The teeth were painted with AP Skeleton Bone. I didn't see any need to highlight the teeth as they're pretty small.</div><div><br /></div><div>The bronze areas (collar and high quarters Khorne mark) were based in AP Oak Brown and then AP Weapon Bronze. I will say that I miss the coverage of the GW base paints, but the AP paints are working well. Once dry, I used AP Soft Tone to tone the bronze bits down a little.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuOi2V-57dInWOnsOK9IIDnzLYAdJgcTIb031TNf9aLq-qfEffFoF8aLFAhCz6It-lKnzq3YNZDG_w0oqJPHgPOr5Wx-jx2gf4ZEIw0mBAeu-cldMnHYN8e1SYWxf9-3uRaP3SJiLwjXc/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="557" data-original-width="766" height="291" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuOi2V-57dInWOnsOK9IIDnzLYAdJgcTIb031TNf9aLq-qfEffFoF8aLFAhCz6It-lKnzq3YNZDG_w0oqJPHgPOr5Wx-jx2gf4ZEIw0mBAeu-cldMnHYN8e1SYWxf9-3uRaP3SJiLwjXc/w400-h291/IMG_20200603_003308506.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>This is as far as I got. While painting, I watched around three episodes of Breaking Bad, so I guess this took about three hours. I'm pretty impressed with how the contrast paints work. I can definitely see buying more of those for future projects.</div><div><br /></div><div>I still need to do some more detail work here. I want to highlight the bronze a bit more and maybe add an orange glow around the high quarter Khorne marks. I also need to paint in the eyes and decide whether or not I want to leave the spine spikes red or paint them like the teeth. Toes need to be painted also.</div><div><br /></div><div>I'll decide on the base when the rest of the model is done. Hopefully soon.</div>Kris Wallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03377993642155815622noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4778348387555569382.post-8283380694454331862020-06-04T01:00:00.001-04:002020-06-04T01:00:04.083-04:00Project Khorne Dogs - KaranakOk... time to hobby. It's been awhile since I've touched a pair of clippers or a brush. I want to try some new things this time around.<div><br /></div><div>For this army, I've decided to go with my standard cork and sand basing scheme. I haven't quite decided on the basing colors yet, but probably a dirty brown. I don't want too much contrast with the red models.</div><div><br /></div><div>Karanak was super easy to assemble. My local store reopened for business a few days ago (screw you Covid-19!!!), so I was able to pick up some Bob Smith Industries (BSI) Plastic Glue and Super Glue. The stuff is amazing. Can recommend. I'm trying to be a little smarter where it comes to hobby expenditures (given that need to re-buy basically everything I owned), so I'm using an inexpensive primer from Home Depot...</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimNituIUhsXGS0JKxz3Lh-B9CFyPnUvP_ygRFecG3VOjguNEJlz_bB7y7d7Mz6jsPJ0QlBPtQRch6EBLrS6Ql8Gv7fDGTbPB-X7r3v9GYE3FZ6LIbm_TXMuRgh4fPxzMRKvft_yFnx8Kk/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1400" data-original-width="1400" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimNituIUhsXGS0JKxz3Lh-B9CFyPnUvP_ygRFecG3VOjguNEJlz_bB7y7d7Mz6jsPJ0QlBPtQRch6EBLrS6Ql8Gv7fDGTbPB-X7r3v9GYE3FZ6LIbm_TXMuRgh4fPxzMRKvft_yFnx8Kk/w400-h400/GUEST_898c2950-d689-40d5-96da-38312b1e346b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Stuff works surprisingly well. It reminds me a lot of the standard Games Workshop black primer, but at only $4 per can. I think I'll be using this from now on. I've had lots of wonderful friends step in and try to make me whole. My friend Jon B. sent me hobby tools, paints, brushes and a Prophecy of the Wolf starter box. My other friend Chris V. dropped off two copies of the Khorne side of Wrath and Rapture.<div><br /></div><div>I've decided to start with Wrath and Rapture as I've never painted predominantly red models and I think it'll be a good challenge.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAJ_u64wQE_Ilq6UcV86Cmt3Hrhe-87c2kJEo6ACw658TeXCZyS-z86qiKKWKuxVlosk84xOPSU88LLsa0-3XhoWbtIQ_t2cPv-CHmuwYbNc0aTrTPrt-kodGsj0FKmXI6yMy3_x8zJAI/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="617" data-original-width="1000" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAJ_u64wQE_Ilq6UcV86Cmt3Hrhe-87c2kJEo6ACw658TeXCZyS-z86qiKKWKuxVlosk84xOPSU88LLsa0-3XhoWbtIQ_t2cPv-CHmuwYbNc0aTrTPrt-kodGsj0FKmXI6yMy3_x8zJAI/w400-h246/WRMinis-Dec11-ContentsTerrain7dl.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>I'm currently sitting on...</div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>2x Karanak (the named Flesh Hound)</li><li>20x Bloodletters</li><li>6x Bloodcrushers</li><li>10x Flesh Hounds</li></ul><div>I realize that Warhammer 40k 9th Edition is just around the corner (at this point it has been announced, but without a release date), so it doesn't make a lot of sense to try to make an army list quite yet. Fortunately, these units don't have much in the way of options. My plan is to add banners and musicians (is that the right name?) where possible, because it adds a little flair to the army. At the current points levels, and taking all the available options, this is basically a ~660 point Patrol Detachment. I'd have to add more Bloodletters and a second HQ to turn it into a Battalion. Might happen. Might not.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>I'm not entirely sure where I'll start. Probably with Karanak. He's a single model and I have a spare in case I screw up the color scheme.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Kris Wallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03377993642155815622noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4778348387555569382.post-74458328088617092922020-06-03T08:41:00.000-04:002020-06-03T08:41:20.172-04:00I'm BackLet me start this off by saying that it's my intention to restart this blog. I was suffering from a sort of hobby malaise for awhile and let this slip. I experienced recent tragedy when my home burned down, losing most of my possessions in the process. I'm now in a position where I want to rebuild, but I want to do it right. That means hobby progress logs, accurate inventories, etc.<div><br /></div><div>You'll be seeing a lot of posts coming up soon. I won't be posting on a specific schedule, but I will be posting every time I hobby, which I'm hoping is at least 2-3 times per week.</div>Kris Wallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03377993642155815622noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4778348387555569382.post-26363621524828218932019-11-07T22:21:00.001-05:002019-11-07T22:21:28.954-05:00Marvel Champions InsertI made this!<br />

They've been consistently out of stock from GW for something like 9 months. As such, I've decided to take matters into my own hands and build something. The plan is to do a floaty pyramid with a "teleportation matrix" built in as a big lens and then something Canoptek looking to carry the weapon systems. I'll do something similar for the Doomsday Ark.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I threw together an initial Mk1. I think it needs some detail work, but overall I'm pretty happy. The pyramid base is about 60mm across, so it should be roughly the same size as the pilot's area on a real Ghost Ark.</div>

Sold! My printer has been running non stop for a couple of days now to print all the pieces. They all sort of dovetail together. It's a really smart design. The guy who runs Warlayer.com designed the thing. He's amazing. Buy his stuff!<div>

I think it's going to take me awhile to work on this thing. I ordered some airbrush paints, which I think will help a lot, but they're currently on back order. I'd order from somewhere else, but I got an amazing discount.</div>

This is a pretty quick and dirty color scheme intended to more or less replicate the official scheme. I think it's a pretty good fit. In any case, my buddy was pretty excited, so I guess I did a good job! haha<br />

This last shot is what roughly 20 years of progress looks like. I haven't been painting the whole time, or I'd probably be a lot better by now, but 20 years ago my best move was pretty much to stay in the lines. Huzzah!<br />

I used an airbrush to do the skin. Bugman's Glow followed by Flayed One Flesh. The airbrush gives me tons of transition. I then sprayed a tint of Reikland Fleshshade over the whole thing before going to town on the details. Again, really happy with how they turned out.<br />

I was a little concerned that the skin would make them look weird compared to the rest of the army, but I think there are enough common points to tie them in. Here's a quick shot with a few other models from my team.<br />

A simple head swap using Immortal heads and I have what I think will be pretty solid Flayers. The plan is to paint them to look like they're covered in layers of bloody skin with blood effects on the scythe blades. The stripe down the forehead will be the blue to tie into the rest of my army.<br />

The current Flayers are Finecast models with some pretty spindly parts. My plan is to never buy another Finecast model. I'll convert what I need to convert, but I'm not using Finecast parts.<br />
<br />
This is causing a bit of an issue with my Necron army. I can make some pretty nifty Lords and what not out of the Praetorians box, but the Flayers have eluded me. I've seen tons of conversions online where people just put plasticard "scissors" on the end of Warrior arms. I'm looking for something a little more exciting.<br />
<br />
I'm going to buy some of these and see if I can do a conversion that looks convincing. Wish me luck...<br />

<br />
The surgery was minor and fine. I just fell out of the hobby for a little while. Kill Team has sort of captured me and pulled me back in. My local store ran a short campaign to test the waters and quite a few people signed up. I'm in for the second, followup campaign.<br />
<br />
Let's see... what else is new?<br />
<br />
I got a new job. I'm a projects guy at one of the bigger banks. My first task was to go to the Bahamas for a week and review some stuff there. Pretty tough gig!<br />
<br />
I also got a 3D printer. I can't remember if I posted about it or not before. I've been cranking out terrain left and right. It's not great for models, but it's pretty solid for vehicles and terrain. I'm working on a custom Kill Team board in the background now.<br />
<br />
More to come. The goal is to get back to posting Monday, Wednesday and Friday... starting with tomorrow's welcome back hobby post.Kris Wallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03377993642155815622noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4778348387555569382.post-21472378883286462242018-01-31T08:43:00.001-05:002018-01-31T08:43:35.806-05:00SurgerySurgery today, so there might not be any decent posts for a week or so. I wantsI'm seriously debating getting a small force of Adeptes Custodes... maybe 1000 points or so. With how expensive, points-wise, the models are, we'd be talking about a pretty small force. They just look so pretty. These suckers just hit this weekend...<br />
<br />
Should I do it? I especially like the Terminator dude with the axe.<br />

The tank is coming along nicely. I'm having to do things the old school way with absolutely no drybrushing. As this is 3D printed, drybrushing accentuates the printed layers. Old school basecoating and layering almost completely hides the layers.<br />
<br />
I still have to do the hatch, turret and some details like the Storm Bolter.<br />
<br />

I'm following GW's paint guide for Space Wolves via their YouTube channel. It's not hard, but it is a bit time consuming.<br />
<br />
I haven't quite decided how to do the bases. I'll probably stick to the snowy/rocky theme. I also need to finish the weapons. They definitely shouldn't be straight metal.<br />

I reworked my predator turret in this fashion and I'm pretty happy with the results. I'm working on putting some paint down on this sucker. As you can see, I also widened the wheel base a bit.<br />

I did quite a bit of work recently. The sides were redesigned to have more detail, including headlights and a rim around the wheel wells. The turret was completely redesigned and is about 4-5mm shorter than the old version.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Nice quick post here. I made a small Storm Bolter bit that slots into the hatch holes on my wheeled Rhino design. It rotates freely.</div>

Next up, I'll be doing a new version of the sides with headlights and increased detailing.</div>

I wasn't interested in going with the standard design, but I did want to retain the Space Marines aesthetic. I think this was a good attempt, but the turret is WAY too big. It looks almost comical to me. I'll definitely be redesigning it as a slim line version.<br />

I have Rhino, Razorback and Predator versions all designed at this point and needing to cycle through the printer.<br />
<br />
Some initial feedback I got is that the detail is too limited and the wheels are too close into the body. I'll post the next version on Monday, which includes a Predator turret.<br />

I've been learning a lot about using Google Sketchup to design and print objects. Overall, I was pleased with the result, but I think the aesthetic is a little off. It looks more like a generic sci-fi transport to me than it does a Warhammer 40k transport. The front in particular doesn't scream Space Marines to me.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I did include one photo of the un-assembled model. It's hard to see, but there are tabs on the side of the body and slots on the side of the side pieces. You don't have to line up anything... just dab glue on the slots/tabs and stick together. The goal was to make these EASY to assemble and somewhat modular. I had to print the sides flat to eliminate any overhangs. 3D printers don't like overhangs!<br /><div>
