Arkham Horror TCG - Scenario #1 - The Gathering

I've decided to play through a solo mode version of Arkham Horror The Card Game and document the whole thing.  I picked Ashcan Pete as my investigator.  Here goes...

NIGHT OF THE ZEALOT

a.k.a.
Ashcan Pete’s Booze Fueled Nightmare

The Deck – Ashcan Pete

  • Arcane Studies
  • Baseball Bat x2
  • Bait and Switch x2
  • Clarity of Mind
  • Dig Deep
  • Drawn to the Flame x2
  • Duke
  • Fire Axe x2
  • Guts x2
  • Internal Injury – Random Basic Weakness
  • Knife
  • Leather Coat x2
  • Look What I Found
  • Lucky! X2
  • Manual Dexterity x2
  • Perception
  • Peter Sylvestre x2
  • Rabbit’s Foot
  • Scavenging
  • Survival Instinct
  • Unexpected Courage x2
  • Working a Hunch
  • Wracked By Nightmares

SCENARIO #1 – THE GATHERING

Opening Hand – Bait and Switch, Lucky!, Drawn to the Flame, Fire Axe, Rabbit’s Foot

TURN 1

  1. I spent 1 resource to play Fire Axe.
  2. I spent 1 resource to play Rabbit’s Foot.  Never hurts to be prepared, Ol’ Pete always says.
  3. I exhausted Duke to Investigate, drawing a tablet token, passing 2 v. 2 and taking a clue.

At the end of the round, I drew Scavenging and gained a resource.

TURN 2

1 of 3 doom on the Agenda.
I drew Swarm of Rats from the Encounter deck, causing it to engage me.  I probably need to call the exterminator.  It’s really bad when your house has rats.

  1. I attacked the Swarm of Rats, drawing a -1 token for 1 v. 1, killing the Rats.
  2. I exhausted Duke to Investigate, drawing a skull token, giving me 4 v. 2, taking the second clue.  I chose to use my two clues to progress the Act, putting the Attic, Cellar, Hallway and Parlor locations into play.  I feel through the Study door into the Hallway and realized the Study would be inaccessible until I’d sorted my house out.
  3. Given that hallways are boring, I moved to the Cellar, taking a damage as I slipped down the steps and bumbled around in the dark for a bit.

At the end of the round, I drew Dig Deep and gained a resource.

TURN 3

2 of 3 doom on the Agenda.
I drew Ancient Evils from the Encounter deck, adding a doom to the Agenda and progressing it.  Given the choice between taking horror or discarding a random card, I chose to discard.  I discarded Scavenging.  I guess I won’t be able to find anything in the Cellar.

  1. I needed a little light, so I played Drawn to the Flame, drawing Crypt Chill from the Encounter Deck.  I drew a skull for the test, avoiding the negative penalty with a 4 v. 4 result.  I then took two clues from the location, completing the room.
  2. I moved to the Hallway.
  3. I then climbed up to the Attic, being forced to take a horror as I looked around at the stacks and stacks of board games I’ve bought and will likely never play again.

At the end of the round, I drew a Fire Axe and gained a resource.

TURN 4

1 of 7 doom on the Agenda.
I drew Rotting Remains from the Encounter deck.  I drew a skull token, passing the test with 4 v. 3 and taking no negative effect.

  1. I played Dig Deep since it never hurts to be prepared.
  2. I exhausted Duke to investigate, drawing a 0 and passing with 4 v. 1 result.  I gained a clue, leaving one in the Attic.
  3. As a free action, I discarded Fire Axe to ready Duke.
  4. I exhausted Duke again to investigate, drawing +1 and passing 5 v. 1.  I gained another clue, completing the Attic.  Duke loves playing in the Attic, but it’s probably time to head back downstairs.

At the end of the round, I drew Guts and gained a resource.

TURN 5

2 of 7 doom on the Agenda.
I drew Frozen in Fear from the Encounter Deck, putting it into play in my threat area.

  1. I spent two actions to move to the hallway.  Those Attic stairs were scary, but I muscled through it.
  2. I spent 3 clues to advance the act, spawning the Ghoul Priest in the Hallway, who immediately engaged me.  Also, Lita Chantler spawned in the Parlor.  I don’t know her.  I’m not sure why she’s in my house.  I’ll sort her later.
  3. I spent three resources on Dig Deep to increase agility by 3 and then attempted to evade the Ghoul Priest.  I drew a cultist token, passing the test with 5 v. 4.

At the end of the round, I drew Lucky! and gained a resource.

TURN 6

3 of 7 doom on the agenda.
I drew another Swarm of Rats from the Encounter deck.  I definitely need to call the pest control people.  This is bad.  How many swarms of rats are there in my house?

  1. I exhausted Duke to fight the Ghoul Priest, drawing a skull for -1.  I chose to spend 1 resource for Lucky, causing me to pass the test 5 v. 4 and dealt 2 damage to the Ghoul Priest.
  2. I discarded Guts to ready Duke and fight again, drawing a +1 token and passing 5 v 4, dealing another 2 damage.
  3. I then attacked with the Fire Axe, spending my last two resources to increase my combat value to 6.  I drew an Elder Sign token, dealing the damage needed to kill the Ghoul Priest.  This caused the Act to advance, ending the scenario.

RESULTS

  1. Lita asked me to burn my house down and I said “Hell No!”, so my house is still standing.
  2. I earned 1 exp for refusing to allow the night’s events to destroy my life.
  3. I earned 4 exp from the Victory Display for fully exploring the Attic, the Cellar and for killing the Ghoul Priest.
  4. I earned an extra 2 exp for gaining insight into the hidden world of the Mythos.

Warhammer 40k 8th Edition... WHEN!?!?!

OMG...

The drip of news is so slow.  I just want to know when this is coming out already.  I have stacks of stuff I actively want to assemble, but I won't know how until I see the new rules.

Ugh.

And the new Datasheets look a little bland.  Also, where are my points?  Am I going to need one Datasheet for abilities and a second chart somewhere for points?

Star Wars: Destiny - eJabba/Vader

I finally got some time to sit down and go through the Spirit of Rebellion cards.  The set has been out for a week now, so I think people will have had time to incorporate the cards into their decks.

I decided to stick with the eJabba/Vader theme, but swapped out about half the cards.  The plan is to play some games this weekend and see how things go.

Runewars - Waiqar Reanimate Archers Test Paint

Hello all!  I decided to sit down and do a little test painting.  This didn't take long...  maybe 30 minutes for all four models, so don't judge me!  I'm looking for just barely table standard.  I'm just not interested in painting a million of the exact same model.

Here is the method and the paints involved...  and then the final product.

Overbrush

Basecoat

Basecoat...  Also, do a sloppy layer of the next brightest purple

Bone colors

Fletching

Sloppy, but done

They'll look better once they have bases

Runewars - Waiqar the Undying Priming!

I haven't had much motivation lately to paint.  I think a big part of it is that one of my close friends recently (well...  within the least year actually) moved out of the area.  We used to together to paint and he was one of those dudes that you could show a finger painted model to and he'd get excited.  I think I've had a 'why bother' mentality lately.  I need to get over it.

I miss you, buddy.

So, today, the weather was about perfect for priming.  I gathered up the majority of my Waiqar Runewars models and did a mass priming.  It was therapeutic.  It feels good to have a project to work towards.  I need to come up with an easy paint scheme for these guys.  I want them to look good, but I definitely don't want a complex scheme with a kajillion steps.  I'm thinking an overbrush of dark brown over the whole model followed by base colors and an all over brown wash.  That should do the trick.  More details to follow.

Magic the Gathering Modern Masters 2017 Magic League

As I mentioned before, several of us have to decided to try out Magic the Gathering in a very limited sort of way.  The ultimate goal is to work our way up to a Commander deck, which is to say a 100 card deck where you can have as many basic lands as you want, but otherwise can't have any duplicate cards at all.

To start off, we bought three packs of Modern Masters 2017, a set that has a ton of pretty cool reprint cards from prior sets.  Based on what I got, I was able to build the following deck.  Pictures, because pictures are fun.  For lands, I have 5 Forests, 4 Plains, 3 Mountains and a Shimmering Grotto.  The Shimmering Grotto will hopefully be nice because it lets me 'fix' my mana from one color to another.  That's 13 lands total, leaving me with 17 other cards.

The deck has 8 Creature cards, which I'm hoping is a good number.  It's a little under half of the non-land cards in the deck.  I picked all of the Creature and other spell cards that deal with Token Creatures, in an effort to bulk up my army without having to waste cards.

Lastly, I picked 9 non-Creature cards.  I'm hoping that I got the mana curve right...  in other words, that I'll have enough mana to cast these cards.  Three packs is a woefully small selection of cards to pick from.

There you have it.  Three packs used to build a 30 card deck.  In the past, I never used white or red cards, so this will be a new experience.  I do like the game, but I generally don't like the people who play the game.  My hope is that putting artificial limits in place (one pack per week added to the collection) will also limit the competitive streaks of the people I play with.  Time will tell.

Some Much Needed Heavy Support

I bought this awhile ago, but just recently worked up the motivation to put it together.  The recent articles about the upcoming 8th Edition of Warhammer 40k hav perked me up a little.  My one buddy Max has an Imperial Fists army and has been doing a ton of painting work lately.  I've decided that I need to do a little more work on my Iron Warriors to make sure I can play a decent sized painted list when the new edition comes out.

More X-Wing Custom Repaints

Super quick post tonight.  I wanted to have a Y-Wing as an option for the Aturi Cluster campaign, so I painted one up really quickly.

I think it turned out ok.

The Bad Thing

I'm thinking about doing a thing.  It's a bad thing.  It's THE bad thing.

It's this...

I saw an ad today for a Magic League, which basically involves a fairly minimal purchase.  A couple of friends said they'd go in with me.  It's a sort of mini campaign with the rules as such...

  • Week 1: Start with 3 Amonkhet boosters. Build a 30-card deck, making sure to include 12–13 lands.
  • Weeks 2–4: You may add 1 additional booster from Amonkhet.
  • Bonus: If your deck receives a third loss, you may add cards from 1 additional booster.
My plan is to pick up a handful of boosters tomorrow and see what happens.  I might just get the above pictured "Amonkhet Bundle".  It has a Player's Guide, which I'll totally need for the rules as well as 10 boosters of the most recent set, 20 "fancy" basic lands, 60 normal basic lands, a spin down life counter, a storage box and 1 of each token creature in the set.  It's enough to keep me playing for about two months using the one booster per week rule.

God help me.
