Necron Floaty Thing

I've given up on finding a Ghost Ark that isn't either pre-owned/built or selling above MSRP on eBay.  They've been consistently out of stock from GW for something like 9 months.  As such, I've decided to take matters into my own hands and build something.  The plan is to do a floaty pyramid with a "teleportation matrix" built in as a big lens and then something Canoptek looking to carry the weapon systems.  I'll do something similar for the Doomsday Ark.

I threw together an initial Mk1.  I think it needs some detail work, but overall I'm pretty happy.  The pyramid base is about 60mm across, so it should be roughly the same size as the pilot's area on a real Ghost Ark.

A Special Project

I was surfing Thingiverse and found plans for a Bolt Pistol that is sort of a cross between the older styles and the newer Primaris style.  Sold!  My printer has been running non stop for a couple of days now to print all the pieces.  They all sort of dovetail together.  It's a really smart design.  The guy who runs Warlayer.com designed the thing.  He's amazing.  Buy his stuff!

I think it's going to take me awhile to work on this thing.  I ordered some airbrush paints, which I think will help a lot, but they're currently on back order.  I'd order from somewhere else, but I got an amazing discount.

Some Infinity Models

My buddy plays a lot of Infinity and asked me to paint up some more models for him.  This is a pretty quick and dirty color scheme intended to more or less replicate the official scheme.  I think it's a pretty good fit.  In any case, my buddy was pretty excited, so I guess I did a good job!  haha

Airbrush Class

I bought myself a Badger 105 airbrush and took a class offered by CK Studios.  Best decision I've made in a while.  I'm not going to go into detail on what I learned, but I will say that if you're interested, look up CK Studios and give them a chance.

Transitions, transitions, transitions!!!

This last shot is what roughly 20 years of progress looks like.  I haven't been painting the whole time, or I'd probably be a lot better by now, but 20 years ago my best move was pretty much to stay in the lines.  Huzzah!

Painted Necron Flayers

Totally happy with how these turned out.  I used an airbrush to do the skin.  Bugman's Glow followed by Flayed One Flesh.  The airbrush gives me tons of transition.  I then sprayed a tint of Reikland Fleshshade over the whole thing before going to town on the details.  Again, really happy with how they turned out.

I was a little concerned that the skin would make them look weird compared to the rest of the army, but I think there are enough common points to tie them in.  Here's a quick shot with a few other models from my team.

A Simple Head Swap

Those Grimghast Reapers worked out pretty well.  A simple head swap using Immortal heads and I have what I think will be pretty solid Flayers.  The plan is to paint them to look like they're covered in layers of bloody skin with blood effects on the scythe blades.  The stripe down the forehead will be the blue to tie into the rest of my army.

Necron Flayers Suck

Or, more specifically, Finecast sucks.  The current Flayers are Finecast models with some pretty spindly parts.  My plan is to never buy another Finecast model.  I'll convert what I need to convert, but I'm not using Finecast parts.

This is causing a bit of an issue with my Necron army.  I can make some pretty nifty Lords and what not out of the Praetorians box, but the Flayers have eluded me.  I've seen tons of conversions online where people just put plasticard "scissors" on the end of Warrior arms.  I'm looking for something a little more exciting.

I'm going to buy some of these and see if I can do a conversion that looks convincing.  Wish me luck...

I'm not dead.

It occurs to me that posting a cryptic message about going into surgery, followed by total radio silence was probably a little grim and misleading.

The surgery was minor and fine.  I just fell out of the hobby for a little while.  Kill Team has sort of captured me and pulled me back in.  My local store ran a short campaign to test the waters and quite a few people signed up.  I'm in for the second, followup campaign.

Let's see...  what else is new?

I got a new job.  I'm a projects guy at one of the bigger banks.  My first task was to go to the Bahamas for a week and review some stuff there.  Pretty tough gig!

I also got a 3D printer.  I can't remember if I posted about it or not before.  I've been cranking out terrain left and right.  It's not great for models, but it's pretty solid for vehicles and terrain.  I'm working on a custom Kill Team board in the background now.

More to come.  The goal is to get back to posting Monday, Wednesday and Friday...  starting with tomorrow's welcome back hobby post.

Surgery

Surgery today, so there might not be any decent posts for a week or so.  I'm hoping it doesn't take that long.

Adeptes Custodes... I wants

I'm seriously debating getting a small force of Adeptes Custodes...  maybe 1000 points or so.  With how expensive, points-wise, the models are, we'd be talking about a pretty small force.  They just look so pretty.  These suckers just hit this weekend...

Should I do it?  I especially like the Terminator dude with the axe.

Space Wolves Wheeled Rhino Chassis Painting WIP

I finished the bases for the HQs, but still need to do a bit more detail work.  The tank is coming along nicely.  I'm having to do things the old school way with absolutely no drybrushing.  As this is 3D printed, drybrushing accentuates the printed layers.  Old school basecoating and layering almost completely hides the layers.

I still have to do the hatch, turret and some details like the Storm Bolter.

This one will probably end up as a Razorback for a Grey Hunters squad.  I'm not sure.

Space Wolf HQs

I cranked out some painting over the weekend and have MOSTLY finished two of my HQs from my work in progress Space Wolves army.  I'm following GW's paint guide for Space Wolves via their YouTube channel.  It's not hard, but it is a bit time consuming.

I haven't quite decided how to do the bases.  I'll probably stick to the snowy/rocky theme.  I also need to finish the weapons.  They definitely shouldn't be straight metal.

Slim Predator Turret

I decided that I like the look of the more streamlined, fixed turrets.  I reworked my predator turret in this fashion and I'm pretty happy with the results.  I'm working on putting some paint down on this sucker.  As you can see, I also widened the wheel base a bit.

Wheeled Rhino Mk3

I did quite a bit of work recently.  The sides were redesigned to have more detail, including headlights and a rim around the wheel wells.  The turret was completely redesigned and is about 4-5mm shorter than the old version.

Versus the initial version from two weeks ago, I think this one definitely has a Space Marine aesthetic.

More to come!!!

Storm Bolter Bit

Nice quick post here.  I made a small Storm Bolter bit that slots into the hatch holes on my wheeled Rhino design.  It rotates freely.

Next up, I'll be doing a new version of the sides with headlights and increased detailing.

Wheeled Rhino Mk2 w/Predator Turret

I designed a Predator turret to go with my wheeled Rhino.  I wasn't interested in going with the standard design, but I did want to retain the Space Marines aesthetic.  I think this was a good attempt, but the turret is WAY too big.  It looks almost comical to me.  I'll definitely be redesigning it as a slim line version.

Wheeled Rhino Mk2

This is sort of a teaser image because I've done a TON of work on improving this design in the mean time.  I have Rhino, Razorback and Predator versions all designed at this point and needing to cycle through the printer.

Some initial feedback I got is that the detail is too limited and the wheels are too close into the body.  I'll post the next version on Monday, which includes a Predator turret.

Wheeled APC/Rhino Mk1

This is my initial attempt at making a wheeled Rhino chassis.  I've been learning a lot about using Google Sketchup to design and print objects.  Overall, I was pleased with the result, but I think the aesthetic is a little off.  It looks more like a generic sci-fi transport to me than it does a Warhammer 40k transport.  The front in particular doesn't scream Space Marines to me.

I did include one photo of the un-assembled model.  It's hard to see, but there are tabs on the side of the body and slots on the side of the side pieces.  You don't have to line up anything...  just dab glue on the slots/tabs and stick together.  The goal was to make these EASY to assemble and somewhat modular.  I had to print the sides flat to eliminate any overhangs.  3D printers don't like overhangs!

OMG...

I have so much new stuff to post.  I started a new job recently, which took ALL of my time and effort.  I joined a new team that had recently been formed to resolve what I can only describe as a circus of garbage.  Combine that with my brother having a spine surgery and then a second surgery to fix the results of the first surgery AND my wife having a particularly nasty and lasting stomach flu (I mean, really...  the flu is supposed to be a couple of days max!).

BUT...  I think things are under control now.  My goal is to queue up a good two weeks worth of Mon, Wed, Fri posts so that I can get back into the swing of things.

First up is something that's coming out soon.  GW just announced more Custodes models with a proper Codex and HQ options and what not.  I'm seriously considering building a 1000pt force.  1000 points seems manageable and given the elite nature of the army, would probably be only about 15 models!

Here are some of the pictures from Warhammer World Open Day.  The one Contemptor Dread looks like the basic plastic one with a really goofy wing bit glued onto the front.  I hope that's not an official plastic variant.  Looks pretty bad.
