I Painted a Butt.

I don't know whether I should celebrate or cry in shame.  I painted one of the Pelegarth Bloodmasks as a test model.  I rarely paint much skin, so this was sort of a new thing.  I was surprised to find that the models are actually a lot rougher than I thought they were initially.  It was tough to get a smooth base coat in places.  All told, I think it worked out.

These are the colors I used.  I'm mainly posting this as a reference for myself, but if you want to try to replicate the effect, here you go...

The skin is a base of Ratskin Flesh, which required several watered down coats to make smooth.  It's a base, but it doesn't cover well.  I then washed with Reeikland Fleshshade.  I finished the model with a highlight of Cadian Fleshtone on all the raised areas.  I think I needed 2-3 watered down layers to get a smooth coverage.

For the base, I drybrushed Rhinox Hide, followed with Steel Legion Drab and Flayed One Flesh.  The rim is based with Steel Legion Drab.

The metal bits are just Leadbelcher washed with whatever the black wash is called...  Nuln Oil?  The red parts are Mephiston Red and Evil Sunz Scarlet.  I put a little black wash in the eye sockets to give some depth.  I did try a little Blood for the Blood God on the sword.  I'm not sold on the effect, but figured that I bought the paint...  I should use it.

It's going to take FOREVER to paint all these skin.  I don't know what I was thinking.  At least now that I have a scheme, I should be able to knock them out fairly quickly.  For the Patrol list, I only have to paint 5 more.  The Brutes are also all skin, but it's a different model, so should feel like a different painting experience.

Wrath of Kings - Priming Happened!

I had a tiny bit of sunlight when I got home, so I did a bit of quick priming.  I didn't bother gluing sand to the bases.  I don't think I'll need it.  Once I start painting, I think I might be able to just either use nothing (if not needed) or just use some of GW's texture paints.  I think I'll be ok with just the cork and some static grass.  The plan is to do these guys with rocky bases and grey/white static grass.  I want a cold mountain top sort of vibe.

I assume my neighbors think I'm cooking meth or something.  I mist look like a total crazy person to them.  It's just so cold out, and without the mask, my allergies EXPLODE when I'm using spray cans.  the fake fur hat probably doesn't help.

Wrath of Kings - Nasier Patrol List is Built

I got a little more free time for hobbying and cranked out the rest of my Nasier Patrol sized list.  I'm not sure if I mentioned this or not, but Wrath of Kings comes in three sizes...  Patrol, Skirmish and Battle.  We collectively decided to try out the Patrol size before committing to anything larger.

Since my last post, I got a Pelegarth Brutes box in from eBay.  It retails for $35, but I got it for $11 with free shipping.  The same masks that make the women into stone skinned warriors make the men into muscle bound freaks.  They're led by a demon headed Warden.

Upon opening the box, all you see is a TON of packaging.  Like...  a TON.

There is so much packaging that every model has its own factory sealed baggie.  I didn't think it as possible to be worse at over packaging than Fantasy Flight Games, but here's the proof.  The cards came in a bag, but I took them out to show that you get one card per unit, not one per model.  The cards are really just for reference.

Bot the Warden and the Brutes come with minimal parts that need to be glued on.  As with the other models, they fit together perfectly.  The one exception is that the "slot in post" on one of the brutes was a little long and needed to be trimmed down.  The box came with 2x Wardens and 6x Brutes.  The Infantry boxes seem to always come with 2 ranks of Leaders and 12 ranks of Infantry.  The Brutes are rank 2, so 12 ranks works out to 6 'roid freaks.

My Patrol sized list is now complete.  I decided to stick with the Pelegarth theme and see where it takes me.  The Starter comes with enough models that I can swap out for 2x rank 1 Ashmen Hakar Leaders and 12x rank 1 Ashmen Swordsmen, leaving the Specialists alone.  I like how many different army styles you can field with a relatively low dollar investment.

I'm pretty psyched to play a game.  I'm not sure how long it'll be until I can.  As far as modelling goes, I tend to be the guy who muscles through it the quickest.  I have two friends with Starters...  Hadross and Goritsi factions.  Hopefully we'll be able to play a learning game soon.  I'll post more as I hear more...

Wrath of Kinds - Initial Nasier Build

I was able to sit down and spend a little time with my new Wrath of Kings Starter Box that finally came in.  I will say that the models are pretty nice.  My intention was to put together only the two Specialist models as I had very little time, but as you'll see, the models are super quick to assemble.

First up is a Longhorn.  He came in a total of five parts.  There was no clean up involved at all.  It took all of a couple of minutes to glue the horns and arms in place.  The cork is for the base.

Next is a Rathor.  He's in far more parts, but they all slide together pretty easily.  There is a small gap at his waist that I'll need to fill in, but that's nothing compared to the mold line hell I sometimes see on other models.

I'm really digging the aesthetic of these models.  Time will tell whether or not the game is any good, but the models at least will look nice on a shelf.  I think it'll also be nice to paint something from a new company.  I've probably painted a thousand basic Bolter Marines at this point.

Given that I had plenty of time left, I decided to paint some of the basic infantry.  These are Pelegarth Bloodmasks, led by a Howl.  The Howl is a leader in the game and operates sort of like a unit sergeant, despite there not being units.  I feel that I should explain the outfit (or lack thereof).  From a gaming perspective, the mask makes the women have super hard skin that looks sort of sickly and grey...  stone skin, basically.  Armor would just get in the way, so they wear long boots and basic undies.  We'll see how this goes.  I didn't sign up to paint chubby butts and really picked the faction for the Ashmen models, who are more like heavily robed samurai.  You'll see those soon.

Again, only a few parts.

I spent maybe a total of an hour assembling these seven models.  They represent 1 rank of Leaders, 3 ranks of Infantry and 2 ranks of Specialists.  I need 2, 12 and 2, respectively, for a starter sized game.  That means more building should be coming soon.
