More Necron Warriors Finished + Group Shots

I got some serious motivation over the last couple of days and cranked out the other 7 Warriors I had assembled and primed.  Here are a couple of work in progress shots...

I have enough of the army painted now that I felt it was worth getting out my "taking pictures" tile and snap a couple of group shots.  I will say that I'm REALLY happy with how the energy rods on the Warriors turned out.  The army is really starting to have a cohesive look.  I'm NOT happy with the scythe on the Nightbringer.  I might have to paint it black and try again.

Here you go...

Next up I have some Immortals.  I've already started on them, but I'm very up in the air on the base size.  Immortals, Deathmarks, Praetorians and Lychguard are starting to ship with 32mm bases.  I'm ok with keeping Warriors on the smaller 25mm bases, but I'd rather keep the army with the most current base size.  Hence, I may or may not rip the Immortals off their 25mm bases, rebase them, prime and start over.

It's just time, right?  As the 4th Earl of Chesterfield said in a letter to his son, "Whatever is worth doing at all, is worth doing well."  Words to live by.  Sigh.  I'm totally rebasing these Immortals.

Incidentally, the tile was done using the same technique I demonstrated in my first painting tutorial video.  If you missed it, you can check it out here...

Coming up Next

I went to my local hobby shop today and picked up a couple of things to work on next.

The plan is to do some Cryptek and Lord conversions out of this box and then put the flyer together as a Night Scythe.  I'm going to TRY to get stuff put together early this week, but we'll see how that works out.  I'm not sure how I'm going to do the Cryptek conversions, but I'm thinking I want to replace the legs with a sort of mini-spyder body.  I'll have to give it some serious thought.  I want them to look really unique and to obviously be Crypteks.

Nihilakh Dynasty Necron Lord #2 - Custom Conversion

Having painted my first Lord, I decided to go crazy and paint my second one.  I mean, what does an army with only 5 painted Troops need more of?  HQ choices!!!

Anyways, this one is a custom conversion.  I'm really happy with how it turned out.  I used the Warhammer Fantasy Cairn Wraith model for inspiration.  This is the stock model from the GW website...

I thought this would look really nice as a Necron Lord conversion.  From a fluff standpoint, I'm imagining that this Lord made a deal with a particularly crafty Cryptek who was able to make the Lord's necrodermis body a little more fluid.  In other words, his body is a constantly shifting mass of necrodermis that floats and flows through battle, cutting his opponent's down as he moves.

I'm really happy with how this turned out.

Nihilakh Dynasty Necron Lord

Motivation struck and I decided to crank out the plastic Necron Lord that comes with the Catacomb Command Barge.  I'll be running mine as an Annihilation Barge, so the Lord is free to hang out with some regular Warriors.

I'm pretty happy with how he turned out.  I don't know exactly how long it took, but it's 7:57pm as I type this and I didn't get home until 5:30pm.  In the past 2.5 hours I painted this guy, did the dishes, did a little cleaning and took out the trash.  Realistically, this probably took about 1.5 hours total.

I'm particularly happy with the Ressurection Orb and the cape on the back of the model.  I took some photos with a retinue of Warriors to demonstrate that the color scheme really works well together.  I think despite having much more ornamentation, the Lord really blends in with the Warriors.

I still need to do static grass on the bases, but I'm planning on waiting until I have more models done to do that part.

Tutorial Video 001 - Cork Terrain Basics

Good news!  I passed my certification test.  I was pretty sure that I was going to, but pretty sure isn't a guarantee.  Happily, I won't have to deal with this for another two years.  The upkeep test is much easier.

I did get my camera in the mail and played around with it for a bit.  The first thing I wanted to do was put up a video tutorial and get people's feedback.

If you like this, or have comments, please comment.  Also, if you think it's worthwhile and want me to keep doing this, PLEASE click on an add or two.  Clicks = money = more hobby content since the ad money rolls straight into my hobby budget.

ANYWAYS...  today's video tutorial is for this guy...

Without further ado, here you go...

I hope you like it!  More to come.  If you have ideas for future tutorials, or would like to see how I did something, let me know in the comments.

Quick Test Video Post

Hello all!  I got my new camera in the mail this morning.  I'm pretty happy with the quality based on my initial tests.  I recorded a quick introduction below so you can see what to expect in the future!

New Photo Template

I've been playing around a bit with some background images for when I take finished pictures of models.  I'm pretty happy with the results.  It was suggested to me that I should also start tagging my photos with the website address just in case people run across a pic on Google Image Search and want the source.  I figure...  why not?  It's about 5 min of extra work every so often.

Here's my first test pic.  It's of my custom Tau Ethereal model.  The model itself is based off of a Fantasy Empire Wizard.

In other news, my industry certification exam is today at 8AM.  I REALLY, REALLY hope I pass.  I've been studying more or less non stop for several weeks now.  I just want this to be done and over with.

More Necrons! Warriors WIP

I needed another break today, so I decided to get started on a basic five Necron Warrior unit.  I'm sticking with my Nihilakh Dynasty paint scheme.  I'm pretty happy with it and I think it's safe to say that the remainder of the Necrons will come out this way.

Warriors are a little bland.  They're also one of those Troops choices that has basically no options and no "sarge" model.  To get around this a little I went with some of the fluff from the new codex.  It more or less says that those Warriors and Immortals who would be "sarges" will get a brass/gold death mask instead of the standard silver.  They also might have a basic glyph on their one shoulder guard.  I decided to do both and am pretty happy with the result.

The plan is to continue doing Warriors in blocks of five with one "sarge" per block.  It takes very little additional time to paint the head and the glyph.

Actual Painting! Necrons C'tan Shard of the Nightbringer

I needed a break from studying today, so I sat down and cranked this sucker out.  It didn't take very long at all...  maybe an hour and a half.  It's a pretty simple color scheme, but I'm happy with how it turned out.  I think it'll look great with my Nihilakh Dynasty Necrons.

Next up I'll be painting two Crypteks so that I can have a Conclave of the Burning One formation.

GW Paint Tutorial - Necrons - How to paint a Necron Overlord.

I'm posting this mainly because I don't have much time to post something of a really high quality right now.  I'm planning on spending a good portion of this weekend catching up on some hobby work, so there's a very good chance that unless the real world intrudes, you'll be seeing some good pictures this coming week.

Having said that, these video tutorials that GW is putting out are really top notch.  If you haven't see them, do yourself a favor and watch one.  There are a ton more on their YouTube channel.  I can't recommend these enough.
